Find answers to some of the most common questions about tryouts, practices, travel, eligibility, and what it is like to be part of Cal Poly Women’s Club Volleyball.
When are tryouts?
The first-round tryout for the 2026–2027 season will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 9:00–11:00 AM inside the Cal Poly Recreation Center Main Gym. First-round cuts will take place following Saturday’s session.
A second-round, invite-only tryout will be held on Sunday, September 6, from 9:00–11:00 AM. Athletes must attend Saturday’s tryout to be considered for an invitation to Sunday’s session.
Are there open gyms before tryouts?
Yes. Preseason open gyms will be held inside the Cal Poly Recreation Center Main Gym from 6:00–8:00 PM on August 25, August 27, September 1, and September 3. These sessions allow prospective players to meet returning athletes and compete before tryouts.
Do I need to attend both tryout dates?
All prospective players must attend the first-round tryout on Saturday, September 5. The Sunday session is invite-only, and invitations will be extended following Saturday’s evaluatio
Where can I meet the team before open gyms and tryouts?
Come meet Cal Poly Women’s Club Volleyball players and coaches in person at the WOW Club Showcase on Sunday, August 23. Stop by to learn more about the program, ask questions about open gyms and tryouts, and hear directly from current players about their experience with the team.
How often does the team practice?
Practice schedules vary throughout the season, but players should expect multiple practices each week in addition to matches, tournaments, and team activities.
Can freshmen and transfer students try out?
Yes. Incoming freshmen, transfer students, and current Cal Poly students are all encouraged to try out. Every athlete is evaluated based on skill, effort, attitude, and overall fit within the program.
Do I need previous club volleyball experience?
Previous club experience is helpful, but it is not the only factor considered. We look for competitive athletes who are coachable, committed, and ready to contribute to the team.
How much travel is involved?
The team competes throughout California and may travel to regional and national events. Travel expectations vary by season and tournament schedule.
